Class 116

Welcome back! It was great to meet you today and start to get to know each other. We will be exploring Social Studies together this year during 3rd and 7th period each day. Today we started off by completing an information sheet which included items like parent phone numbers, e-mail addresses, medical alert information such as food allergies or asthma, and a section where your child shared a bit of information about the things he or she enjoys doing in his or her spare time. Tomorrow we will begin a unit on Christopher Columbus. We will read together and individually, then begin to answer comprehension questions. Depending on the class' and/or your child's needs, we may also work on other material in collaboration with Mrs. Udin, the teacher they are with for most of each day. There is a Back-to-School night on September 18, 2014. Hours are TBA, which I will post when they are announced. Please feel free to contact me at any time; the school number is 718-794-9749. If you prefer e-mail, my address is: sleaveywilson@schools.nyc.gov which I check daily. I look forward to working with your children this year, and to meeting you as well. I hope to see you on the 18th!

Class 116

We continue to study Christopher Columbus. Homework was assigned last night, which all students completed, and which we reviewed in class today. I'm happy with the effort of the class, however, a few students were asked to have an adult help them tonight to correctly complete the questions from last night. Please check your child's homework notebook to see if this applies to him or her. Tomorrow we will work on a crafts activity that is relevant to the Christopher Columbus unit. Students will learn about latitude and longitude after completing the crafts activity. I will then distribute a study sheet for a test on the unit.

The Back-to-School night scheduled for next Thursday, September 18th, will be from 5:30-8:30 pm. I look forward to meeting you!

Class 116

We have begun our unit on the Mayflower Compact. Starting last week and continuing into this week, students will review different sources of information and will watch video clips about the voyage of the Mayflower and life in the Plymouth settlement. There will be a vocabulary quiz, spelling quiz, and current events assignment this week. Students will use I-pads for some of the classroom activities.

6th and 7th grade SETSS students have completed CCLS aligned activities which are proudly displayed on the classroom bulletin boards.

We will be logging into the MYON reading program on our i-pads, in addition to working on various ELA and math skills, as outlined in the CCLS and IEP goals.

It's been a busy quarter!! It's hard to believe that the first marking period is already finished!!! Please be aware parent/conferences will be held the evening of Wednesday, November 19, and during the day on Thursday, November 20. Should you wish to meet with me, my room number is 208.

Class 116

We have been studying about the Mayflower Compact and Jamestown. Students have learned historical facts and vocabulary that pertains to each unit. The students are not only learning about history, they are working on improving their reading and comprehension skills. Our next unit of study will be The Boston Tea Party. Students are able to use I-pads for some of the activities within a unit, which they enjoy very much!

Classes 604, 605, and 704

We continue to work on improving math and ELA skills through a variety of materials and lessons. Students are currently working on a writing piece after reading an article in Junior Scholastic Magazine about the current Ebola outbreak. They have also accessed information on the Junior Scholastic website. Math skills lessons are designed to teach not only skills, but to also encourage accountable talk among students.

Tuesday afternoons from 2:05-3:00 are set aside for teachers to contact parents and have meetings when necessary. If you have concerns and would like to meet with your child's teachers, please contact the school at 718-794-9749 to make an appointment. As well, teacher teams may call a parent and request that they come in to meet about their child's progress. An appointment can be made for other times beside Tuesday afternoons if it is not convenient. You can keep track of your child's grades and assignments through the Weebly and Teacherease websites. If you would like information on these, please contact me or the subject teachers.

Please check to make sure your child is completing homework each night. Homework is an important portion of your child's quarterly grade. The new marking period begins Monday, November 3.

Class 116

Our next unit after Jamestown was the Boston Tea Party, and we are currently engaged in a unit detailing the events that lead up to the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Each unit contains a list of spelling and vocabulary words which students are tested on. We also try to watch an educational film or video that pertains to our unit of study. Students also receive time on I-pads to read electronic books relative to the current unit on the Myon reading program. Homework is based around spelling and vocabulary that intertwine with basic facts from each unit.

Classes 604, 605, 704

We have been practicing citing information from text the students read. This skill is required for students to be able to complete Common Core school-based assignments, as well as demonstrate proficiency on standardized state tests. In addition to this, we have been practicing a variety of math skills, including, but not limited to multiplication, division, understanding fractions, reducing and enlarging fractions, area and perimeter, and negative and positive numbers.

We are well into the 2nd marking period. If you have concerns about anything, please contact your child's teacher, and/or me, to discuss. You are also welcome to make an appointment to meet with your child's teacher team on Tuesday afternoon beginning at 2:05 p.m..

We continue to work with Common Core standards and preparing for the New York State exams in April. Students are seen both in their subject classrooms as well as my classroom. Parents wishing to discuss their child's progress may contact me at 718-794-9746 or sleaveywilson@schools.nyc.gov.

May 6, 2015

We have worked diligently to prepare for the NY State ELA and Math exams in classes 604, 605, and 704. 3rd quarter report cards were distributed about 2 weeks ago, and now tonight is the final parent-teacher conference of the year. Just a few more weeks, and school will be done! If you have any concerns, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

In class 116, we have continued to learn about the American Revolution, and are currently learning about the American Flag and Star Spangled Banner. We'll be attending the Big Apple Circus on May 20, 2015, and the students also have "gym" trips to participate in activities with other schools.

If you were unable to attend the parent-teacher conferences on May 6 and wish to meet with me, please contact me to set up an appointment.
